"Freshwater Biology" Publishes Photo by Lynch on Cover

Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission - Tuesday, July 31, 2018

ANHC’s Aquatic Ecologist, Dustin Lynch, is no stranger to being published in scientific journals. It often comes with the territory of working as a scientist and conducting research. However, not every scientist also lands the cover photo of the scientific journal in which he’s published written work.

Lynch submitted several photos to Freshwater Biology in January when the journal made a call for cover photo submissions for an upcoming Special Issue in which his latest dissertation manuscript had just been accepted for publication. The topic of the Special Issue is Environmental Flows, a field of study that describes the quantity, quality, and timing of water flows in streams and rivers necessary to sustain aquatic species and ecosystems, as well as the ecological services and goods those ecosystems provide to people. His paper describes the ways in which drought can affect Environmental Flow relationships in Ozark mountain streams. Lynch was recently contacted by the journal’s editors, who informed him that his photo of a school of Southern Redbelly Dace (Chrosomus erythrogaster) swimming in a spring-fed stream in northwest Arkansas had been chosen for the cover of the Special Issue.

Lynch says “ . . . the picture they chose – of a school of Southern Redbelly Dace in peak spring color in a creek up in Carroll County – I have always said is my number one favorite wildlife photograph (of any taxa) that I’ve ever taken. My favorite ever photograph on the cover of a special issue containing the biggest paper I’ve ever written.”

As those of us at ANHC know, Lynch is a gifted scientist and an amazing photographer. We’ve come to rely on many of his photographs for use on our website, Facebook, Instagram, e-newsletter, and more. Check out Lynch’s Freshwater Biology cover photo and his article, “The influence of drought on flow-ecology relationships in Ozark Highland streams” online.
