Adopting Group Holds Volunteer Day at Sweden Creek Falls

Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission - Thursday, May 25, 2017

As part of their adoption of Sweden Creek Falls Natural Area (NA), through the ANHC’s Adopt a Natural Area Program (ANAP), the Northwest Arkansas Master Naturalists (NWAMN) recently held a volunteer day at the natural area. Members spent the morning doing a “work and learn” session.

Volunteers performed trail maintenance, including removal of fallen tree limbs and weed trimming. Remnants of old fencing were removed.

Upon a recent visit to Sweden Creek Falls NA, ANHC Director Darrell Bowman was impressed with how well the upper trail was maintained and that no more fencing was visible along the trail. “We really appreciate the NWAMN volunteer work at the area,” Bowman said.

During the volunteer day, group leaders surveyed a recent glade restoration area and checked on invasive plant growth. They instructed new members on wildflower identification, tree identification, nature photography, and trail maintenance guidelines.

The ANHC’s ANAP offers groups the opportunity to sign up to “adopt” a local natural area and help with periodic stewardship work, one-time projects, research, and species monitoring. If your group would like to sign up to adopt an area, please fill out our online Adopt a Natural Area Inquiry Form or call 501-324-9619 for more information.
